Recent studies have also suggested that the use of gestation crates is linked to potential health hazards for human consumers. Animals contained within close quarters increase the spread of bacteria and infection. This causes a need for high potency antibiotics and hormones, which often remain in the final meat product.
We are addressing this letter to a few well-known companies who are believed to employ the use of gestation crates and asking them to help protect the health of our communities while implementing humane animal practices.
Mr. John Kathol
Vice President of Investor Relations and Assistant Secretary
Tyson Foods, Inc.
Dear Mr. Kathol,
As a concerned individual, I am asking your company to end the use of gestation crates in the production of consumer meat.
The use of gestation crates has reportedly contributed to a host of environmental, public health, economic and food safety problems. In addition to these issues, we are very concerned about the welfare of female pigs, as these meat production tactics have been reported to subject sows to a lifetime of pregnancy, birthing and nursing in a crate that prevents them from moving.
My health and the health of families in my community are important to me. I do not want to support a company that profits from the inhumane treatment of animals and uses tactics that endanger my family’s health. Until your company has addressed this important issue and the use of gestation crates, I will not buy or recommend your products to others. Moreover, I intend to encourage fellow Moxy Vote users that are Tyson shareholders to penalize the board of directors if this issue is not addressed to my satisfaction. If you, or your suppliers, are using gestation crates, we ask that you work to change your production methods or more clearly articulate why they cannot or should not be changed. Please keep us posted on your plans through Moxy Vote.
Sincerely,
