Center for Political Accountability's Position
The absence of scrutiny and transparency has exposed companies to substantial legal and reputation risks that, at times, have turned out to be costly. Resolutions coordinated by the Center for Political Accountability (CPA), a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group and its 30 socially responsible investor, foundation, religious and pension fund partners prompt companies to disclose and account for their political spending. The resolutions call for companies to require the board of directors oversee the company's political spending. The proposals also ask companies to fully disclose on their websites an itemized list of their corporate political donations at the state and local level, to 527 organizations and political payments to trade associations and other tax-exempt groups, such as 501(c)(4)s.
